Rhodope Mountain Ride

2 days Departs from Sofia Bulgaria

Highlights

  • The western Rhodopes — deep mountain roads far from the tourist circuit
  • Pamporovo — overnight in Bulgaria's mountain resort at 1,650 m
  • The Krichim — Devin road along the Vacha reservoir on Day 2
  • Sub-Balkan return via Karlovo, Vasil Levski's birthplace
  • Small group — maximum 10 riders

The Rhodopes don’t announce themselves. The mountains rise gradually — then suddenly the road tips into a gorge, the temperature drops ten degrees, and you’re somewhere else entirely. Two days, one overnight deep in the mountains, one big loop across the Western Rhodopes and the Sub-Balkan valleys — parts of Bulgaria that most visitors never connect.

Overview

This is a circular route from Sofia. Day 1 cuts south through the Thracian plain and turns west, climbing deep into the Rhodopes to reach Pamporovo at 1,650 m. Day 2 drops east through Devin, picks up the Vacha reservoir road, and returns to Sofia along the Sub-Balkan valleys.

The roads mix fast plain runs, pine-lined mountain climbs, and the narrow reservoir road along the Vacha — one of Bulgaria’s finest riding roads. Traffic is light once you leave the main arteries. Villages along the route are small, traditional, and almost entirely unvisited by foreign tourists.

Maximum 10 riders.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Sofia to Pamporovo (approx. 300 km)

We leave Sofia early and head south, crossing the Thracian plain before climbing deep into the Western Rhodopes. The route passes through remote mountain villages rarely seen on organised tours — dense forest, quiet roads, and the kind of scenery that rewards not knowing exactly what’s coming next.

Lunch is not included but entirely unmissable — there are exceptional Rhodope taverns along the route, and we will make a point of stopping at them.

Overnight in Pamporovo at 1,650 m — Bulgaria’s flagship mountain resort, much quieter in summer.

Day 2 — Pamporovo to Sofia (approx. 300 km)

Breakfast is included at the hotel before departure. The return route takes in one of Bulgaria’s finest reservoir roads — narrow tarmac through a canyon, with constant bends, tunnels, and water on both sides. From there we cross north through the Rose Valley and follow the Sub-Balkan foothills back to Sofia, arriving late afternoon.

Lunch is at your own pace and cost — there will be no shortage of good stops along the way.
