Highlights
- Rila Monastery — Bulgaria's most iconic landmark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Pine forest roads through the Rila Nature Park
- Lunch stop in Borovets — Bulgaria's oldest mountain resort
- Smooth roads throughout — ideal for newer riders
An easy day out from Sofia that delivers far more than the distance suggests. One UNESCO World Heritage Site, 220 kilometres of smooth mountain roads, and you’re back in the city by early evening with your hands still warm.
Overview
This is a circular route built around two things: the Rila Monastery and the roads that connect it to the outside world. We leave Sofia heading south-west, drop into the Struma river valley, and follow the gorge road up to the monastery. From there we cross the mountain foothills to Borovets — Bulgaria’s oldest ski resort, much better in summer than in winter — before looping back through Samokov and the Iskar river valley.
The roads are wide, well-surfaced, and largely free of heavy traffic on weekends. There are no challenging passes, no gravel sections, and no altitude above 1,200 metres. This is a route for riders who want to explore the mountains without technical pressure — and for experienced riders who simply want a clean, effortless day in good company.
Maximum 15 riders. Lead and sweep throughout.
Itinerary
Morning — Sofia to Rila Monastery (approx. 120 km)
We leave Sofia from a central meeting point at 08:30. The route heads south-west on fast dual carriageway to Dupnitsa, then turns east into the Rila foothills on a quiet two-lane road that winds up the Rilska river valley.
The Rila Monastery sits at the end of the valley, surrounded by forest and enclosed by high walls that have been rebuilt and restored over nine centuries. We stop here for an hour — enough time to walk through the main courtyard, see the frescoed church, and have a coffee in the small café by the entrance gate. It is one of those places that genuinely justifies the detour.
Afternoon — Rila Monastery to Borovets and back to Sofia (approx. 100 km)
After the monastery we cross the mountain foothills via a forest road that connects the Rila valley to the Borovets plateau. This is the most scenic section of the day — narrow tarmac winding through pine forest with occasional open views south towards Greece.
Lunch in Borovets at a mountain restaurant with an open terrace. Included in the price. After lunch we descend through Samokov and follow the Iskar river north back to Sofia, arriving mid-to-late afternoon.
